“In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but how many can get through to you.”
– Mortimer Adler

I thought all the readers in the blogosphere with toppling tbr piles would appreciate this one, I certainly do! There are so many intriguing books out there, that a readers dilemma is often how they are going to try and fit them all into one lifetime. For this reason, I can sometimes get into the mindset where I find myself reading a book just so I can get it off my tbr pile to get to the next book, and so on. I think the emphasis of reading stats in the past few years of my life hasn’t helped with this either. Goodreads is always telling me how many books, pages and genre’s I’ve read and comparing it with other readers, almost giving the process of reading a competitive edge. While I love having this information about my reading habits it can also feel overbearing and unnecessary at times. Luckily for me, these moods only tend to last about a week before I give myself a good shake, and a reminder of what reading is really about; enjoying and savouring each book. Quality of reading not quantity!
I love how beautifully worded this quote is and the way it acts as a little reminder. I think It is much better to read slowly, taking the details in and enjoying the story and/or message of a book than rushing through and not truly appreciating it. Then again, maybe I’m biased because I’m a slow reader. 😉
Happy booking bloggers!

A nice reminder 🙂
I’m the same as you, so easily influenced by the stats! Especially now I have a spreadsheet to update…
I’m glad you liked it, I do think it’s a great reminder. 🙂
Aha I think most of us are us are these days, although maybe it’s even worse when your in the science profession like us, who knows? 😛
You have a spreadsheet?! What’s on the spreadsheet? I must know, lol! *excited kid at christmas face*.
Haha yes I do, someone I follow mentioned it in a post and I got overexcited about it so she told me where you can download it. Here you go: http://fyreflybooks.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/tss-track-your-reading/
Enjoy!! It took over my life for a few days while I worked out how to update it (it’s a few years old) but finally the Excel training came in handy…..
Wow, that looks LEATHAL for procrastinating and also for readers like me who love stats! I think I better stay far, far away before I get too temped. Otherwise I will become even MORE obsessed with stats, lol. 🙂
Thanks for the link, I may have to give it a go when I am less swamped with work.
Great quote. I love a book that rattles your insides and makes you think and reconsider the world.
Thanks Tony I’m glad you appreciated it. I love them too; they can be hard to find, which makes them even more rewarding!
Yes, I can totally relate to this blog. Thanks for reminding me what’s truly important :).
Hehee, I though you might be able to. 🙂 Maybe we should stick this one on our walls!
Maybe we should put it on top of our TBR pile LOL!!
Ha, ha, so true!
I need to repeat this quote over and over to myself as some sort of personal mantra! I need to enjoy reading, not worry about the sheer volume that I need to get through.
I’ve (hopefully) got years and years left to continue on my reading journey. Sit back, enjoy the ride 😉
Haha me too! It’s definitely worth reminding yourself when you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all the books you want to read. It can be easy to lose sight of just enjoying reading when there’s so much to get through as you’ve mentioned. As least it’s a good kind of overwhelmed for the most part. 🙂
LOL, damn straight. 😛
Reblogged this on A Simple Wordsmith and commented:
I rush to much when reading. I need to keep this quote in the back of my mind.
Thanks Rion!
I try to remind myself this often, especially when I see all of the books that I still want to read but don’t have time to. I work at a library, so the temptation is always there! You have great taste in quotes 🙂
It’s definitely something bookworms should keep in their heads, I’ve found it can be easy to lose sight of the true reason you love reading, especially when you are monitoring the amount you read, what you’ve got to read and how many books you’re reviewing! Ohh wow, I feel your pain girl! When I worked at the second hand book shop it was lethal. :S
Thank you Holly. 🙂 I’m sorry it took me so long getting round to replying!
Couldn’t agree more with this post! I’m a bit of a slow reader, too 🙂
To be fair, though, I do have a database where I’ve recorded every book I’ve read for the last seven years, and I’m guilty of trying-to-read-multiple-books-at-once-in-an-attempt-to-maximise-my-reading-capacity… But there’s nothing like a good “book hangover”, and I usually won’t pick up another book until the hangover has satisfactorily subsided
Thank you, so glad you like it! Phaa, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a slow reader, I like to think we take in more of the details. 😉
A database wow, you’re taking it to a whole new level, I love it! As I’ve said in this post I do love learning about my reading habits and keeping track of things, I just feel it is important not to lose sight of why we do it. 🙂 I am definitely guilty of reading more than one book at a time as well, I love reading that way, being able to pick and choose what I’m in the mood for. When I was younger I used to read about six at once!
Ahh gosh yes I love book hangover’s too, it’s such a strange but amazing feeling. I’m actually suffering with one right now. Thanks for reading and commenting!
Amazing and Thank you… @ ^_^
kindness blossoms in your heart
My love be your friend in all journey
Thank you for reading and the well wishes, I’m glad you enjoyed! 🙂
Such a useful quote! I constantly feel guilty about the amount of books I don’t read, but if I think I should remind myself of this one more often! Thanks for sharing Becky 🙂
I’m so happy you liked it, Lottie! It is all too easy to feel guilty about the books you aren’t reading and not appreciate the ones you are. What’s a bookworm to do? 😛
No problem, thanks for reading as always. 😀
