7 Books On My Summer TBR Pile!

Hello everyone!

It’s that time of year when I’m really getting into that summer feeling (or trying to, with the British weather yo-yoing from scorching heat to torrential downpour). I definitely always notice a change in my reading habits as soon as the weather gets warmer – I find myself reaching for contemporary YA over fantasy novels, and I steer towards more lightweight reads over anything too involved. Looking at my TBR and wishlist, below are some novels I’m really looking forward to reading this summer! *

*As a mood reader, making a bold statement about having a summer TBR will inadvertently mean I don’t get around to reading half of them, but hey, a girl can dream!

 

 

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

I’ve just purchased Leah on the Offbeat and I’m anxiously awaiting its arrival via post. This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I read Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda early in January doubting that it could possibly live up to the hype and WHOA, IT SO DID. Why was I ever a doubter? I can’t wait to read Offbeat because 1. gorgeous cover with all my favourite colours and 2. I found Leah to be a really interesting misfit side character in Simon so I’m really excited that she’s getting her own spin off!

 

Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin

Rules of Summer is one of my backlist books. I purchased it a couple of years ago, lured in by the pretty sunset cover and pastel hues but I’ve never gotten around to reading it. Because the book actually has summer in the title, I feel like I can only pick it up during the limited UK  sunny months! This year I’m determined to get to it. The blurb promises friendship and romance with a protagonist working a summer job for a wealthy family. Sounds like the perfect lightweight read!

 

Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Katherine Webber

I read and really enjoyed Katherine Webber’s debut novel Wing Jones last year. It was a fantastic story about grief, friendship, and strong families ties. It was sincere and fresh! This week I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of her newest book Only Love Can Break Your Heart which will be released in August, and I can’t wait to give it a try! The blurb is mysteriously vague, describing two characters who are clearly dealing with their own struggles and pressures who meet and find solace in the landscape of the desert. I can’t wait to get reading and find out more!

 

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur

I read Rupi’s collection of poetry Milk and Honey at the start of this year and absolutely loved it. It’s a book that seems to divide a lot of readers. For me, I am not a fan of poetry at all so I loved the author’s minimalist simple style – whereas I understand a lot of people consider the style too simplistic to be poetry and don’t get on with it at all. All I know is that after reading Milk and Honey which was so raw, honest and unapologetic in a wonderfully feminist way I am DESPERATE FOR MORE. I can’t wait to get my hands on her new collection The Sun and Her Flowers!

 

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

Every summer I pick up a Sarah Dessen novel, and I will continue to do so until I run out of her books! This author is always my go-to as soon as the sun comes out and I auto-buy any of her work. Just Listen, Along for the Ride and Dreamland by Dessen are some of my favourite contemporaries. In the last two years I’ve explored some of Dessen’s older works, so this year I’m going to move onto one of her more recent, The Moon and More about a teen struggling with staying in her comfort zone vs reaching out into the unknown and developing into an adult. I’m looking forward to seeing how it ranks with her other works!

 

Rosie Loves Jack by Mel Darbon

Last on my summer TBR list is Rosie Loves Jack. I haven’t seen any buzz around this book yet, but it’s early days and I think it will come. This book is currently planned to be published in September (you don’t even seem to be able to get a stock cover photo at the moment!). Mel is a debut author and her book features a protagonist with Down’s Syndrome dealing with the everyday struggles of falling in love and finding independence. I’ve worked with a few people with Down’s Syndrome so I am so excited to see this rep and I can’t wait to read it. I AM EXCITED. I really hope it’s done well and I’m definitely going to prioritise this novel this summer!
