7 Books On My Summer TBR Pile!

7 Books on my Summer TBR Pile.png

Hello everyone!

It’s that time of year when I’m really getting into that summer feeling (or trying to, with the British weather yo-yoing from scorching heat to torrential downpour). I definitely always notice a change in my reading habits as soon as the weather gets warmer – I find myself reaching for contemporary YA over fantasy novels, and I steer towards more lightweight reads over anything too involved. Looking at my TBR and wishlist, below are some novels I’m really looking forward to reading this summer! *

*As a mood reader, making a bold statement about having a summer TBR will inadvertently mean I don’t get around to reading half of them, but hey, a girl can dream!

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

Leah on the Offbeat

I’ve just purchased Leah on the Offbeat and I’m anxiously awaiting its arrival via post. This is one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I read Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda early in January doubting that it could possibly live up to the hype and WHOA, IT SO DID. Why was I ever a doubter? I can’t wait to read Offbeat because 1. gorgeous cover with all my favourite colours and 2. I found Leah to be a really interesting misfit side character in Simon so I’m really excited that she’s getting her own spin off!

Rules of Summer by Joanna Philbin

Rules of Summer

Rules of Summer is one of my backlist books. I purchased it a couple of years ago, lured in by the pretty sunset cover and pastel hues but I’ve never gotten around to reading it. Because the book actually has summer in the title, I feel like I can only pick it up during the limited UK  sunny months! This year I’m determined to get to it. The blurb promises friendship and romance with a protagonist working a summer job for a wealthy family. Sounds like the perfect lightweight read!

Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Katherine Webber

Only Love Can Break Your Heart

I read and really enjoyed Katherine Webber’s debut novel Wing Jones last year. It was a fantastic story about grief, friendship, and strong families ties. It was sincere and fresh! This week I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of her newest book Only Love Can Break Your Heart which will be released in August, and I can’t wait to give it a try! The blurb is mysteriously vague, describing two characters who are clearly dealing with their own struggles and pressures who meet and find solace in the landscape of the desert. I can’t wait to get reading and find out more!

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur

The Sun and Her Flowers

I read Rupi’s collection of poetry Milk and Honey at the start of this year and absolutely loved it. It’s a book that seems to divide a lot of readers. For me, I am not a fan of poetry at all so I loved the author’s minimalist simple style – whereas I understand a lot of people consider the style too simplistic to be poetry and don’t get on with it at all. All I know is that after reading Milk and Honey which was so raw, honest and unapologetic in a wonderfully feminist way I am DESPERATE FOR MORE. I can’t wait to get my hands on her new collection The Sun and Her Flowers!

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

The Moon and More

Every summer I pick up a Sarah Dessen novel, and I will continue to do so until I run out of her books! This author is always my go-to as soon as the sun comes out and I auto-buy any of her work. Just Listen, Along for the Ride and Dreamland by Dessen are some of my favourite contemporaries. In the last two years I’ve explored some of Dessen’s older works, so this year I’m going to move onto one of her more recent, The Moon and More about a teen struggling with staying in her comfort zone vs reaching out into the unknown and developing into an adult. I’m looking forward to seeing how it ranks with her other works!

Rosie Loves Jack by Mel Darbon

Rosie Loves Jack

Last on my summer TBR list is Rosie Loves Jack. I haven’t seen any buzz around this book yet, but it’s early days and I think it will come. This book is currently planned to be published in September (you don’t even seem to be able to get a stock cover photo at the moment!). Mel is a debut author and her book features a protagonist with Down’s Syndrome dealing with the everyday struggles of falling in love and finding independence. I’ve worked with a few people with Down’s Syndrome so I am so excited to see this rep and I can’t wait to read it. I AM EXCITED. I really hope it’s done well and I’m definitely going to prioritise this novel this summer!

  1. I’m huge mood reader as well, and I definitely gravitate towards lighter and easier reads during summer. I hope you love Leah on the Offbeat, it has great pop culture references! And I actually preferred The Sun and Her Flowers to Rupi Kaur’s first poetry book, so I’m curious how much you’ll like it. I’m crossing my fingers for your ARCs to work out as well, Only Love Can Break Your Heart sounds really intriguing. 🙂

    Wonderful post, Becky! ❤

    • Ooh, I love good pop culture references, I’ll look out for those!
Oh really? That’s interesting to know. I will keep my fingers crossed that I enjoy collection 2 EVEN MORE. I don’t know so much about the content of this one, so it’s quite nice to go in with less prior knowledge.
Thank you, my reviews will tell all in due course! 😀

      Thank you for reading!

  2. The covers on these are all gorgeous, I could just swoon over them for a bit! I have to admit, I’m not normally a seasons-reader but as soon as it was bright and sunny, I was reaching for The Wildflowers! So maybe I am and just didn’t know it… Dreaming is good, but I hope for your sake you get through at least some of them!

    • Haha, agreed! It would actually be quite hard for me to pick a favourite cover out of these. They all make me feel wistful about the smell of cut grass.
Maybe you’re a mood reader but less of a polarised one? 😉 I do still read fantasy books when its summer, I just slightly less of them and vice versa in winter.

Thank you, I’m thinking half is a good goal for a mood reader like me!

  3. All look great for summer and seem to fit the season, well the covers do have a summer vibe to them.
My summer plan is to catch up on some epic fantasy and YA fantasy I’ve been interested in. Hopefully I can squeeze in a classic.

    • The covers certainly do have that summer vibe. Just looking at them makes me feel like I can lure the British sunshine back with pure force of will. 🙂
I’ve actually been going through a real classic dry spell. I was really into them at the start of the year and I think I overdid it a bit because now I haven’t picked one up in a while. Hopefully, I’ll get back to that soon.

Good luck with your summer plan!

  4. I like the minimalist cover of “the sun and her flowers”. Maybe it’s more like blank verse than poetry?

I’ve just ordered “Release” by Patrick Ness and “Challenger Deep” by Neal Shusterman…expecting those by the end of the week. Also, I noticed the school library has a copy of “Scythe” which I’m going to grab when I get a chance. That should keep me going for a while!

    • Maybe, Tony, maybe. It’s all the same to me to be honest (I always zoned out when poetry came up at school, it’s never has been my thing). I loved Rupi’s though so maybe I’ve just been reading the wrong poetry…?

Oooh, I look forward to seeing what you think of both of those. I still really need to get around to the Chaos Walking and The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I’ve got a part written review of Syche by Shusterman to complete as well. I’m interested to give some of his other work a go!

      • I was exhausted by the end of the Chaos Walking series…the characters were so well developed, it felt like I’d been through their war with them!

I wouldn’t go any further than the first two books in Shusterman’s “Unwind” series…it ran out of steam fast after that. I don’t think he ever meant it to be a series…

I’m looking forward to that review of Scythe! (No pressure, or anything. 🙂 )

      • I think that’s always the sign of an amazing series – when you’re exhausted at the end! You feel like you’ve gone on the journey with the characters, trekked through the mountains to hell and back again.

Aw that’s a real shame. I REALLY enjoyed Scythe but I’m also a bit worried about its capacity to be a series – maybe he’s one of those whose style lends itself more to standalones.

  5. Hey book Buddy. Summer reading is the best isn’t it? However, I kind of wish new book releases would slow down a bit because my TBR piles are becoming hazardous LMAO. My death notice is going to read “killed by an avalanche of books”, but I still keep buying new ones every week 😂😂. Happy summer reading!

    • It sure is! I know EXACTLY what you mean. My reading and processing speed cannot keep up with my grabby hands at the moment. THERE’S JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME.
I think my death notice will match yours, LOL. Oh well, at least it shows we’re really passionate about something. 😀

  6. Becky, I’m afraid I haven’t or heard of many of the books on your summer TBR. As for myself, I am taking part in the 10 Books of Summer reading challenge (also 20 and 15 levels). For which I have tried to come up with a varied list of books, so whatever mood I may be in there should hopefully be something I’ll fancy reading. Happy summer reading 🙂

  7. I’ hoping to get to THE MOON AND MORE this summer too! It’s the only Dessen book I haven’t read (I feel like it somehow slipped my radar) and while I’ve heard mixed things I definitely want to at least give it a chance- and her books are always perfect for summer!

    • No, way, that’s awesome! I’ve just been searching Sarah Dessen on the internet and I’ve also realised that it’s only The Moon and More and Saint Anything that I haven’t read. WHAT WILL WE DO WITHOUT ANY MORE SARAH DESSEN?!

I remember hearing mixed things about The Moon an More as well, so fingers crossed!

  8. So many great contemporaries, Becky! Have you gotten to some of them yet?
I’m going to have to admit that I’m part of the side that didn’t love milk and honey… but I could appreciate the minimalism and messages despite not liking the actual verse. And yes! Sarah Dessen is also an auto-purchase author for me; her books made my teenage summers. :’)

    • Thank you! I’ve now read Rules of Summer (5 stars) and Leah on the Offbeat (4 stars) both lived up to my expectations as super fun summer reads so fingers crossed for the rest!

Always happy to find another Dessen fan! Which of her books is you favourite?

  9. I hope you enjoy Leah more than I did! I struggled with it because I also recently read Simon for the first time and loved it SO much, it was hard for the spinoff sequel to live up to it in my mind. I’m planning on reading The Moon and More this summer too! I think it’s the only Dessen book I’ve yet to read- I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on it as I know it’s a divisive one!

    • I am pleased to say that I did enjoy Leah on the Offbeat! I also read Simon late and very close to the sequel but still really enjoyed it despite also having a lot of issues with some aspects. I was definitely conflicted in some places!

Can’t wait to compare notes on The Moon and More. 🙂

  10. Hi Becky, happy to see you back blogging again.
I know what you mean about reading habits changing over summer, I can never quite explain why but I know it definitely does! Thankfully the weather seems to have stabilised a bit lately but as you say, you can never tell when it’s going to yo-yo back to being grey and rainy. 😦

Of your picks, Rosie and Jack really sparked my interest. I’ve never read a book where the main protagonist has Down’s Syndrome, or anything of the like really, so I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open for that one as I’d be really interested to read it. 🙂

      • Thank you, it’s good to be back. 🙂
It is funny how the weather can affect our mood, and as an extension of that, our reading! I have to say with all this hot weather we’re having in the UK I am starting to run out of contemporaries on my shelf to read! I’m going to have to go on a book buying spree soon!

I’m so glad to hear Rosie Loves Jack has interested you. I’ve read most of the books on this list now but not that one. Can’t wait to give it a go!
