The Pancake Book Tag // Pairing Books with Sweet Treats!

 

Hello everyone! Today is Shrove Tuesday, hurrah!

While I’m not religious in any way, I certainly jump on any excuse to have a sweet treat like a pancake or waffle, and I have a feeling you do too! 😉

I was scratching my head trying to think of a themed post that I could do around pancake day (and treats in general) because sugar is awesome, and suddenly it came to me, A PANCAKE BOOK TAG.

So I had a little google, and it turned out that I couldn’t see that anyone had done this before, WHAAAAT. So now I feel like pancakes have been underrepresented in the book community, which is just not okay! Naturally, I felt I had to write this wrong.* Also, for the record, I think pancakes should be an all year thing. How do we overlook this?

*I have always been a champion of the underdog

So, I got down to business and created my first ever original book tag, which was kinda scary, but also, I had so much fun doing it and playing around with all the graphics!

Let’s do this thing!

 

I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about The Night Circus on my blog before, and that’s mostly because I’m very conflicted about it. The plot felt flimsy and bizarre, the romance convoluted and the characters felt more like shadows as opposed to full-fleshed individuals that I could grab on to…. BUT, I kind of didn’t mind because THE WRITING WAS SUBLIME. It was like honey and starlight and the smell of crisp night air. It’s magic and wonder and mystery encased in the arena of a circus that dazzles. This story could have had no plot at all and I would still be sighing in contentment at the prose and beautiful descriptions!

 

The first character that comes to mind for this category is definitely Sarene from Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I would say that she’s a sharp character in both wit and temperament! She’s a noble lady plonked into a completely different city with its own rules and cultures, and within a week, she’s not only banded together a group of the most influential men in court, but she’s completely in charge or them, running rings around the king, and basically winning at life due to her clever chess moves! I’d certainly love to plot and scheme with Serene over a glass of wine, I think she’d be a riot. 😀 

 

Rainbow Rowell is synonymous with comfort for me! Her writing is simple yet quirky, and Eleanor & Park has to be one of the most beautifully hesitant love stories of our time – everything is careful and refrained, and the very act of holding someone’s hand is as mindblowing as an atomic bomb.
This story takes me straight back to first loves and the awkwardness of teenagerdom. The fact that Eleanor and Park meet on the school bus also holds a special place in my heart, as I spent 5 years of my school life dealing with the social psychology of bus politics!

 

Uprooted was my first Naomi Novik novel and it was an exceptional 5-star read for me! It’s a Rapunzel fairytale retelling – Agnieszka is taken from her small village to live in the tower with the ‘Dragon’ (not an actual dragon though, that’s just the dude’s name!). While there, she studies and learns magic and ends up joining an ancient battle between humans and their evil wood. Lemmie tell ya, I’ve seen a lot of supernatural woods in my time, but the mythology of this one was mindblowing. This story was so wonderfully fantastical I didn’t want it to end and I felt like I’d run a marathon afterwards!

 

 

The Bone Season is a book that gave me indulgent feels on multiple levels. It gave me London feels because so many of the scenes take place in, around, or under famous landmarks and I love seeing places I know well featured in books.
It gave me all the fantasy feels because this book has a completely unique world setup full of clairvoyants with complex spirit powers.
Finally, it also gave me serious romance feels; Page and Warden have the PERFECT slow burn, enemies to lovers romance and the tension is unreal!

I feel like I could have picked almost any character from this series and they’d fit this category perfectly, they’re all so morally grey and do AWFUL things, but normally because of their own warped logic they think they’re doing something good.

However, I’m picking Victor Vale who has the ability to manipulate people’s pain. 
He murders a lot of people in cold blood, yet, he was set on the path by a tragedy that wasn’t his fault, and has been punished and hunted for it ever since. He also rescues 12 year old Sydney, looks after her, and becomes her kind of dark, morally ambiguous father figure. So he clinically murders people, but secretly has a soft centre!

 

You probably already know a lot about this one if you read my recent review, but The Quiet at the End of the World was one of those books where every time I thought I knew where it was going on, I was wrong!
I’m usually pretty good at guessing twists in books but this one was slippery and I didn’t see a lot of the shockers until they were right in front of me! Anddddd that’s all I’m going to say, because otherwise SPOILERS. 😉

I really wasn’t sold on Clary and Jace ship, guys. It took a LOOOONG TIME. It probably didn’t help that I was late trying this series (in my 20s) and so all the life and death dramatics seemed a little over the top and Twilighty. I also felt like Jace was a whiny marshmallow and Clary a bit of an idiot (why does she always rush straight into danger with no plan, HELLOOOO). However, as I made my way further through the books something funny happened, I started to have FEELINGS about these star crossed lovers who could never get a moment to themselves. I started getting these weird warm butterflies in my belly when they interacted, and by the final book I was yelling passionately and shaking my fist at Cassandra Clare saying ‘let them be together, already!’

I think Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones has definitely earnt herself this spot! I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a repugnant character. Just when you think she’s done her worst, she’ll shock you be reaching new depths! She’s completely selfish and power hungry with a biggggggg side of crazy! She betrays and manipulates people on a regular basis, she claims to love her children yet gets them into nightmare situations, and she bullies those she loves. She also royally messes up the Capital of Westeros, causing wars and poverty.
Give a hand to Cersei, everyone!

 

 

I’ve picked My Heart Goes Bang for this category because I really appreciated the breadth of LGBTQA in it. I don’t think I’ve come across a book yet that has explored sexuality as broadly as this one, many of the characters aren’t even sure what their ‘labels’ are yet because they’re questioning how they feel (while others are sure they’re bisexual or pansexual). As a straight gal, I don’t really feel like I could comment on how well these different sexualities were represented, but I did feel like the author approached it with a very open dialogue – everything seemed very respectful and non-judgemental to me!
