The Pancake Book Tag // Pairing Books with Sweet Treats!

The Pancake Book Tagh

Hello everyone! Today is Shrove Tuesday, hurrah!

While I’m not religious in any way, I certainly jump on any excuse to have a sweet treat like a pancake or waffle, and I have a feeling you do too! 😉

Pancake gif.gif(Literally drooling at this picture right now. Ahdfjdhfiufjf, NOM)

I was scratching my head trying to think of a themed post that I could do around pancake day (and treats in general) because sugar is awesome, and suddenly it came to me, A PANCAKE BOOK TAG.

So I had a little google, and it turned out that I couldn’t see that anyone had done this before, WHAAAAT. So now I feel like pancakes have been underrepresented in the book community, which is just not okay! Naturally, I felt I had to write this wrong.* Also, for the record, I think pancakes should be an all year thing. How do we overlook this?

*I have always been a champion of the underdog

So, I got down to business and created my first ever original book tag, which was kinda scary, but also, I had so much fun doing it and playing around with all the graphics!

SO, if you’re into munching on pancakes, like reading awesome books, and like food-related puns, read on and discover all your favourite things!

Cat with pancakes gif.gifAccurate footage of me eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. I am a monster.

THE RULES

As with any tag, I’ve created a couple of basic rules:

  • Link back to the original creator in your post (that’s me!)
  • Feel free to use any of my pancake graphics in your post, or create your own!
  • Tag 5 other people at the end of your post, and let them know you’ve tagged them. 🙂

Let’s do this thing!

The Pancake Book Tag 1

The Night Circus

I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about The Night Circus on my blog before, and that’s mostly because I’m very conflicted about it.
The plot felt flimsy and bizarre, the romance convoluted and the characters felt more like shadows as opposed to full-fleshed individuals that I could grab on to…. BUT, I kind of didn’t mind because THE WRITING WAS SUBLIME. It was like honey and starlight and the smell of crisp night air. It’s magic and wonder and mystery encased in the arena of a circus that dazzles. This story could have had no plot at all and I would still be sighing in contentment at the prose and beautiful descriptions!

The Pancake Book Tag 3

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

The first character that comes to mind for this category is definitely Sarene from Elantris by Brandon Sanderson.
I would say that she’s a sharp character in both wit and temperament! She’s a noble lady plonked into a completely different city with its own rules and cultures, and within a week, she’s not only banded together a group of the most influential men in court, but she’s completely in charge or them, running rings around the king, and basically winning at life due to her clever chess moves! I’d certainly love to plot and scheme with Serene over a glass of wine, I think she’d be a riot. 😀

the-pancake-book-tag-2.png

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Rainbow Rowell is synonymous with comfort for me! Her writing is simple yet quirky, and Eleanor & Park has to be one of the most beautifully hesitant love stories of our time – everything is careful and refrained, and the very act of holding someone’s hand is as mindblowing as an atomic bomb.
This story takes me straight back to first loves and the awkwardness of teenagerdom. The fact that Eleanor and Park meet on the school bus also holds a special place in my heart, as I spent 5 years of my school life dealing with the social psychology of bus politics!

The Pancake Book Tag 9

Uprooted by Naomi Novik.jpg

Uprooted was my first Naomi Novik novel and it was an exceptional 5-star read for me! It’s a Rapunzel fairytale retelling – Agnieszka is taken from her small village to live in the tower with the ‘Dragon’ (not an actual dragon though, that’s just the dude’s name!). While there, she studies and learns magic and ends up joining an ancient battle between humans and their evil wood. Lemmie tell ya, I’ve seen a lot of supernatural woods in my time, but the mythology of this one was mindblowing. This story was so wonderfully fantastical I didn’t want it to end and I felt like I’d run a marathon afterwards!

The Pancake Book Tag 6

The-Bone-Season-by-Samantha-Shannon.jpg

The Bone Season is a book that gave me indulgent feels on multiple levels. It gave me London feels because so many of the scenes take place in, around, or under famous landmarks and I love seeing places I know well featured in books.
It gave me all the fantasy feels because this book has a completely unique world setup full of clairvoyants with complex spirit powers.
Finally, it also gave me serious romance feels; Page and Warden have the PERFECT slow burn, enemies to lovers romance and the tension is unreal!

The Pancake Book Tag 4

I feel like I could have picked almost any character from this series and they’d fit this category perfectly, they’re all so morally grey and do AWFUL things, but normally because of their own warped logic they think they’re doing something good.

villians-series-by-v.e.-schwab.jpg

However, I’m picking Victor Vale who has the ability to manipulate people’s pain.
He murders a lot of people in cold blood, yet, he was set on the path by a tragedy that wasn’t his fault, and has been punished and hunted for it ever since. He also rescues 12 year old Sydney, looks after her, and becomes her kind of dark, morally ambiguous father figure. So he clinically murders people, but secretly has a soft centre!

The Pancake Book Tag 5

The Quiet at the End of the World

You probably already know a lot about this one if you read my recent review, but The Quiet at the End of the World was one of those books where every time I thought I knew where it was going on, I was wrong!
I’m usually pretty good at guessing twists in books but this one was slippery and I didn’t see a lot of the shockers until they were right in front of me! Anddddd that’s all I’m going to say, because otherwise SPOILERS. 😉

The Pancake Book Tag 7

City of Bones by Cassandra ClareI really wasn’t sold on Clary and Jace ship, guys. It took a LOOOONG TIME. It probably didn’t help that I was late trying this series (in my 20s) and so all the life and death dramatics seemed a little over the top and Twilighty. I also felt like Jace was a whiny marshmallow and Clary a bit of an idiot (why does she always rush straight into danger with no plan, HELLOOOO). However, as I made my way further through the books something funny happened, I started to have FEELINGS about these star crossed lovers who could never get a moment to themselves. I started getting these weird warm butterflies in my belly when they interacted, and by the final book I was yelling passionately and shaking my fist at Cassandra Clare saying ‘let them be together, already!’The Pancake Book Tag 8

A-Game-of-Thrones-by-George-R.R.-Martin.jpg

I think Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones has definitely earnt herself this spot!
I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a repugnant character. Just when you think she’s done her worst, she’ll shock you be reaching new depths! She’s completely selfish and power hungry with a biggggggg side of crazy! She betrays and manipulates people on a regular basis, she claims to love her children yet gets them into nightmare situations, and she bullies those she loves. She also royally messes up the Capital of Westeros, causing wars and poverty.
Give a hand to Cersei, everyone!

the-pancake-book-tag-10.png

My Heart Goes Bang by Keris Stainton

I’ve picked My Heart Goes Bang for this category because I really appreciated the breadth of LGBTQA in it. I don’t think I’ve come across a book yet that has explored sexuality as broadly as this one, many of the characters aren’t even sure what their ‘labels’ are yet because they’re questioning how they feel (while others are sure they’re bisexual or pansexual). As a straight gal, I don’t really feel like I could comment on how well these different sexualities were represented, but I did feel like the author approached it with a very open dialogue – everything seemed very respectful and non-judgemental to me!

~*~

So that’s a wrap on my first ever self-made tag! I really hope that some of you guys decide to try it out, I know I certainly had fun with it. 😀

It would make me sad if this tag fell as flat as a pancake (ha, sorry, I couldn’t help myself!) 😉 so I’ve just tagged a whole bunch of people in the hope that some of you will like it, but please don’t feel obligated to do it if it’s not your thing!

I TAG…

Drizzle and Hurricane Books | Girl in the Pages | Purely Olivia | Tony’s Rambles | Me and Ink | Another Book in the Wall | Novels & WafflesThe Perks of Being a Bookworm | Dragon Waffles | Brianna the Bookworm | Forever and Everly | My 1st Chapter

… and anyone else who wants to give it a go! 😀

  1. OO, a pancake tag…I had mine for breakfast Sunday. 🙂 Breakfast pancakes made by an American are the best way to wake up to a Sunday.

I’ll have to go away and think about these!

What’s WRONG with peanut butter? Does thou not liketh neither smooth nor crunchy?

  2. OOOOOOH I LOVE THIS BECAUSE FOOD + BOOKS = LOVE any day. Seriously I ship myself with those two things regularly. GIVE BOOKWORMS DELICIOUS FOOD AND ENDLESS BOOKS WE”LL BE HAPPY FOR ETERNITY! Plus you just know my affinity for waffles (ahem ahem lol) so yes this tag is perfect!

Also I have to mention that I don’t recall ever eating American style pancakes??? Yes I am incredibly weird but here in Easter Europe we only eat crepes. Not even the fancy french kind more along the home-made “kinda lame but we put strawberry jam on it so it’s good” kind. I’m now so hungry for some of these though ahhhhhHHHHHHhhhh thank you for making me suffer so.

Shall we make matching T-shirts for the peanut butter hate club society???? Because yes. My hate for the atrocity feels valid now I’m not aloneeeeeee!!

    • RIGHT?!?!? Every bookworm needs good sugary snacks. 😀 Also can I just say that after writing this post and looking at all the images I got SO HUNGRY. Craving for sugar alert! I also LOOOOOVE waffles (I’m kind of known for it) so I think your name is awesome. 🙂

I’m in Europe too and I’ve only ever had American pancakes for pancake day once a couple of years ago, and I was kind of a disappointment because they do taste totally different and I really missed the normal crepes??? I did go through a phase a while back of having American style pancakes for breakfast with butter on, which was nice, but overall I’m crepes all the way!!! Mmm strawberry jam crepes…now you’ve got me licking my lips! 😀

Um, YES, AND WE SHOULD DO IT IMMEDIATELY. I actually can’t even get close to the stuff because the smell is just belughhhh! Nope, nope, NOPE. I need an anti-peanut butter force field!

  3. Since pancakes are my favorite breakfast food, I’m def doing this tag! 😀 Thanks for creating it. I totally agree that pancakes are seriously underrepresented in the book blogging, lol! Glad you remedy that by creating your own tag.

Regarding the Night Circus, I love that book so much because of the writing and how atmospheric it is that I’ve yet to notice its faults when I read it.

    • Yay, thank you so much Zezee, THIS MADE MY DAY. I can’t wait to read your answers, make sure you let me know when you’ve done it and I’ll check it out! 😀

I feel like with The Night Circus, I went in expecting something slightly different to what I actually got in the plot department, so it’s actually a book I would really like to revisit? I think I may feel differently about it on a reread. 🙂

  4. This tag is amazing!! And so creative!! And involves PANCAKES!! I love pancakes and I thoroughly enjoyed pancake day yesterday!! I probably have pancakes 3 times a year– they are a good three days haha!!
My favourite topping is lemon or raspberries and chocolate!! I am with you are about not liking peanut butter *high five*
I love the graphics– they are so cute!!
Oohh I’ve never read uprooted but you have made me want to!! It sounds interesting!!
Cersei is definitely an evil character– there is no limit to what she will do. But I love watching (I’ve never read the books) what she will do!!
Thank you SO much for tagging me in this– I can’t wait to do this!! Pancakes and books- yessss!!

    • Thank you so much, Sophie! I’m so glad you liked it, especially the graphics. 🙂 I was REALLY nervous about making my own tag but I’m having a little proud about how it turned out. 🙂

I LOVE that you have pancakes 3 times a year, it’s probably only twice for me, and that’s normally 1) pancake day and then 2) a week or so after pancake day to finish off the leftover batter! Great choice of a favourite topping. I tend to have chocolate more with waffles as opposed to pancake so I feel like I need to explore this combo more!
Welcome to the peanut butter hate club! *Returns high five.*

If you like fantasy with lots of descriptions and magical creatures I would definitely recommend Uprooted. It has a very modern fairytale feel and has a hate to lovers romance, too. 🙂

You have no idea how ecstatic I am that you are going to do this tag. Please do let me know when you’ve done it and I’ll check out your post! 😀

      • You’re welcome– yes it is lovely!! Aww… you should be proud— it is all incredible (and looks edible)!!

Ah yes!! Sometimes in the year I am like ‘I NEED pancakes’ so I cave in and make some haha!!
I do like chocolate with pancakes– its a good combo. I rarely have waffles *gasp* so I don’t know what my go-to topping for those would be.
Yay thank you, I am know a official member of the peanut butter hate club haha!!

Ohh… that does sound good. I will have to check it out and I do love ‘hate to love’ romance!!

Yes I will do of course. I look forward to doing it!!

      • YOU RARELY HAVE WAFFLES??? Oh my gosh this needs to be rectified imminently, THEY ARE SO TASTY. Basically any pancake topping is also good on a waffle. I tend to go with classic chocolate drizzle but toffee drizzle with coffee ice cream is also absolutely spectacular!
When I comes to pancakes I normally keep it simple and just have sugar, but lately I’ve tested golden syrup WITH sugar which is just ❤️❤️❤️ because there’s not enough sugar in golden syrup already, right?!?! 🤣

      • I know I need to change this immediately!! Chocolate does sound good with waffles!! But I do love coffee and the idea of coffee ice cream on them is amazing!!
Sounds good and pancakes can never be sweet enough!!

  5. AHHHH what a great tag, I love it SO much and all the pancakes, I’m so hungry right now thank you so much haha 🙂
I love your picks here! The Night Circus was… a strange read, but I really liked the writing style a lot. I agree with you about The Quiet At The End of The World, and every Lauren James book, actually, she always surprises me with her twists and turns in her stories and I love it ❤
Thank you so much for tagging me!! ❤ ❤

    • Awwh, thank you so much, Marie, you have no idea how much that means to me! #allthefuzzyfeels
I think a ‘strange read’ sums up The Night Circus quite well, actually! It was certainly a unique experience.
I can’t wait to see what Lauren James comes up with next. After reading Loneliest girl and Quiet, I feel like I need to go back and try her debut The Next Together. 🙂
No problem, I hope you have fun if you decide to do it!

  6. Ahh I’m craving pancakes now! What a fun tag! ❤️

I like the original pancakes with maple syrup. But I’m also kind of obsessed with IHOP’s double chocolate chip pancakes. I don’t even have to be drunk to go there lol. 😂

    • Hurrah! Mission successful. 🙂 Making this post made me crave pancakes so badly too!

I have to say I’m with you with that classic. Pancakes and syrup or pancakes with sugar is usually my go to. 😀
Oh wow, I’ve NEVER had chocolate chip pancakes, that sounds amazing!!!

  7. I LOVE this tag so much! Okay well now I’m craving pancakes.😂I do feel slightly uneducated, because I didn’t know that it was pancake day on Shrove Tuesday?!? (All I knew was that it was the last day of Madri Gras, lol.) Sadly I did not eat pancakes but that can be remedied this weekend for sure. XD
I really just loved all of the prompts you had, the connections to different kinds of pancakes and to the books were so clever and I’m just really excited to do this tag! It may take a while to get around to it, but I most definitely will. Congrats on creating it, too! ❤

    • So glad you like it! Haha, me too *whispers* I had to have another batch last night. It’s the tag’s fault.
Oh really, it’s something I’ve been taught about since primary school but I’m never sure how well known it is! Basically on Shrove Tuesday everyone used to use up the last of their provisions before fasting for Lent, so eggs, flour, milk etc all had to be used – hence pancakes. 🤗 I didn’t know it was on the last day or Mardi Grass so I just learnt something, cool!
Oh I’m glad to hear your getting pancakes this weekend, enjoy!
I Lemmie tell ya, the prompts were HARD to come up with – some came instantly and other I racked my brain for ages, but I’m pleased with the end result. 😁
Thank you so much! You have totally made my day by saying you’ll give the tag a go. 😁❤️👌

  9. I love love LOVE this tag Becky! It’s so fun and creative. I totally feel the same way about Rainbow Rowell’s books – they’re the definition of comforting! I absolutely adore her work. And ahh I’m so happy you picked Clary and Jace! They’re honestly adorable and I just wanted the best for them haha. Thank you so much for tagging me in this 🙂

    • Thanks so much Brianna, it makes me so happy that you liked it!! 😁 😁😁
I adore her work too! There’s actually a few I haven’t read that I really need to go back too… I never read Attachments or that one to do with phones.. I think I need to bump them back up my wishlist!
Haha, thank you. I feel like it was a loooong journey with those two but they got me RIGHT IN THE FEELS IN THE END. I still haven’t read The Infernal Devices and I Realllllly need to get on that!
No problem, I can’t wait to read your answers if you do the tag, but no worries if not. 🙂

  10. first of all, how dare you make me crave pancakes right before bed with all your adorable headers and perfect gifs??? this isn’t okay. but seriously how ADORABLE is this tag, im literally squealing over it (nothing to do with my extreme love for pancakes, totally not)
the night circus is actually the best example of beautiful prose, literally made me heart eyes the entire time reading it. you’re making elantris sound SO GOOD, i love me some wit and humour in characters and also a band of (what sounds like) misfits?? ugh, does it get any better??
the quiet at the end of the world sounds so intriguing, why is this the first time im hearing about the plot twists in it?? definitely adding that to my tbr!
im slightly offended by the peanut butter diss hahaha but this is such a fun (and delicious) tag and thank you so much for tagging me 💖💖 i know im going to have such a good time answering the questions!

    • Ahaha, I’m so sorry I made you crave sugar at an inconvenient time!!!! BUT, I am also shamelessly impressed with myself for affecting your mood from a distance??? LOL. 😀
Thank you so much for your kind words about my tag, this has literally made my day and you are SO kind I can’t even handle it. ❤ ❤ I must admit I felt really proud after I'd finished this post, it makes me feel like I've come a long way with my graphics which is such a good feeling, even if I am still a novice!
Ahaaa, permanent heart eyes is the PERFECT way to describe The Night Circus *high ten*! I did REALLY enjoy Elantris but I know others found it a bit of slow-moving, especially when compared with Sanderson's other books, so I think it does really depend on what your fantasy preference is – if its action, Elantris won't be for you, but the characters completely made it for me. 🙂
Hehehee, sorry about the peanut butter diss, but IT HAD TO BE DONE. I am probably in the minority compared to the rest of the world though, so don't worry. 😀

Ahh, I'm so excited that you're going to give this tag a go! This makes me super happy. I can't wait to read all your amazing answers!

  17. This is such an amazing and creative tag. Thank you for creating it. I had to join it because I can never pass the chance to drool over food and gush about books. =P Victor Vale was also my pick for the Pancakes & Blueberries prompt. He is vicious, but he also has a softness hidden inside him or he would never look after Sydney.

    Happy readings! 😉

    • Thank you so much for your kind words! That means a lot! And I’m super excited that you decided to join in, that’s awesome, thank you. 😀
Drooling over food is the best, especially if it’s sweet food! I’m tempted to do a waffle tag too, but the thing is the toppings would be the same, LOL.
YES, I feel like you’ve summed up Victor so well there! I love that Sydney’s character brings out that other side of him. 🙂

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. ❤
