March Wrap Up // Harry Potter Vibes & Birthday Treats!

4sm

Good afternoon, readers!

I have a question for you: DID YOU MAKE IT OUT OF MARCH IN ONE PIECE? I, my friends, did not. I feel like a walking, talking zombie and I am absolutely cream-crackered! March felt more like 2 months!

THE CHAOTIC THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN MARCH:

This can basically be summed up by crazy work shenanigans: first, one of our main members of staff dropped to 1 day a week unexpectedly (and we were understaffed before), secondly, we took on another member of staff who quit 3 days in. So THEN we had to interview for ANOTHER new member of staff, (it’s a really weird feeling interviewing people, btw). We eventually found one (yay!) but now most days are spent training them, which, lemmie tell ya, is REALLY EXHAUSTING.

NOW, FOR THE REALLY AWESOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN MARCH:

  • I hit 1000 WordPress followers, which was the most amazing feeling and I AM SO EMOTIONAL. :’D
  • Pre the work craziness, I got a promotion! I can now call myself  ‘Assistant Practice Manager’. IT’S SOUNDS SO FANCY. 😀
  • It was my birthday month, and I did a joint birthday celebration with one of my best friends, and we went to the Harry Potter themed School of Witchcraft and Wizardly escape room in London which was brilliant! We got to wear cloaks, wave wands and solve riddles to pass six of our wizarding classes. We escaped just in time and got an O for Outstanding grade! We then went for an amazing meal at the Dishoom in Shoreditch, where I had THE MOST amazing lamb samosas (I could have eaten them all day).
  • The final part of our birthday extravaganza was heading to The Cauldron Harry Potter cocktail experience, which is one of the best things I have EVER DONE, I cannot recommend it enough! You get to make 2 wizard-themed cocktails; you’re given a box with lots of weird vials, there’s dry ice, smoking cauldrons, stirring mechanisms triggered by your wand, and even crazy fire tricks! I just… I can’t even. Every time I think about it I get the hugest smile on my face, and I can’t stop looking back at the pictures and videos. 😀 I’d recommend checking out this Youtube video to see what it’s all about!

books read

Books read March wrap up 2019

Total Books Read:  4| New releases 2| Non-Fiction 1 | Series 1

March was not the greatest reading month, here’s hoping April goes better!

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon | ★★★ 1/2| Comments: It’s taken me a long time to decide how to rate this one… it was my most anticipated read of the year and I felt, well… kinda underwhelmed? And I feel really sad about it. 😦 I’m still collecting my thoughts but they’ll be a review coming soon!

The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan | ★★★★ | Comments: This was a beautiful tale about a Bangladeshi Muslim straddling two cultures and dealing with the fallout when her parents find out that she’s gay. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a very emotional and enjoyable read!

Spellbound by Kelley Armstrong (Women of the Otherworld #12) | ★★| Comments: I feel like this installment was a mess. It didn’t have one cohesive storyline but lots of different threads, half smooshing them together at the end! This felt very much like a bridge novel to get the chess pieces in place for the finale.

The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking | ★★★★| Comments: I have made a shocking discovery my friends, I should have been born in Denmark. It turns out that my unofficial life goal has been to seek out feeling hyggelig, and I didn’t even know it! I’m not normally one for these kind of coffee table books, but this one straddles the vaguely amusing with pretty images and some interesting happiness stats, and I think everyone will be able to take something away from it!

film and TV watched

March Watch list wrap up

I didn’t have much time to watch TV this month but somehow managed to make it through a lot of movies, which is unusual for me!

Avengers: Infinity War | ★★★★| Comments: Another great superhero meet-up film. Overall, this was excellent with lots of great character moments and good funnies, but I just felt like it went on a little bit too long??

Love Simon★★★★| Comments: This was super cute, and everything I hoped it would be! I was a puddle of emotions, especially in the scenes with Simon’s dad where tears ACTUALLY LEFT MY EYEBALLS. It gets 4 stars, though, because I couldn’t help thinking about all the things I loved from the book that didn’t make the cut, and I also didn’t think Leah’s character was moody/sassy enough!

Oceans 8  |★★★★| Comments:| Okay, so I did this completely the wrong way around. I had never seen any of the Oceans films, but this one came onto Now TV, and I’m a huge Sandra Bullock fan so I decided to give it a go, and well, I kind loved it! Highly amusing and fun, it was well acted and kept my attention all the way to the end!

Oceans 11, 12, and 13 | ★★★★| Comments: So after enjoying Oceans 8 so much, I decided I needed to go back to the originals, and I can certainly see why they’re so popular! They’ve got such clever and interesting heist storylines, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. I loved watching Matt Damon squirming, generally failing at life and getting put down by his co-stars, George Clooney crying at Oprah, and Brad Pitt wearing dodgy outfits! All three films were solid 4-stars for me!

Since joining Instagram, I’ve been bombarded with the world of bookish candles, and I am loving every minute of it! I recently came across Elven Wick Candles, one of the only shops whose shipping isn’t astronomical for me, so  I decided to give them a go! I purchased the ‘Luke’s Diner’ candle based around The Gilmore Girls with the scent ‘freshly ground coffee’.

All I can say is ohh my gosh, this is THE BEST SMELLING CANDLE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS! It does have a coffee scent, but it’s also much sweeter and it’s pure HEAVEN. The best part though? I can smell it on my bedside table even when the wick hasn’t been lit! I also love the cute design and it comes in a really solid jar with a metal lid, so it feels high quality as well!

I am a full bookish candle convert and I will definitely be repeat-ordering this candle, as well as trying out some of their other products!

I didn’t feel like I got much of a chance to blog this month! 😦

I was hoping to write a review of Dry by Neal Schusterman, and do a discussion post, but alas life had other things in mind for me! BUT, I did have so much fun making my first ever original tag!

  1. Happy late birthday!💓Oh my gosh, a Harry Potter escape room (and the potions thing) sounds SO fun, that’s amazing. I also really want to watch Love Simon! I hadn’t read the book when it was in theaters but now I’ve read it twice and I just really want to see the movie, haha. And CONGRATS ON 1000 FOLLOWERS, AHHH! That’s so wonderful!🎉

    • Thank you, Olivia!
I think you would actually have been in heaven at the escape room and the HP cocktails, I was beside myself with Harry Potter joy! I can’t even explain the awesome feeling when I put on my cloak and waved my wand. 😍 It was also epic adding things like ‘the sands of time’, ‘dragons breath’ and ‘phoenix dust’ to my smoking drinks. 😁
I hope you get to watch Love Simon soon, it’s worth the wait!
Thank you, it’s surreal, I can’t believe it!

  2. OOO, happy birthday! The Harry Potter stuff sounds like an absolute riot. For one of my wife’s “big” birthdays (I won’t say which one. 🙂 ) a few years ago, we did the Harry Potter studio experience in London at Christmas. That was great!

Work has been a drag this month…just getting worse and worse for me. I’ve been saving all my pennies for a holiday in April as well, so no retail therapy when I could have done with some.

Congratulations on the promotion! You look good in the suit. Also, has anyone ever said you look a lot like Neil Patrick Harris? 😉

    • It really was amazing, I would highly recommend it! I did the Harry Potter studio tour a few years back as well, it was EPIC! I’d really like to go back again because they’ve added whole new sections to discover. I’ve also seen that on holidays you can go and have dinner in the Great Hall, e.g for Halloween or Christmas which I would love to do, but it always sells out so quickly!
I hope April is a better work month for you. I always find it helpful when there’s something to look forward to like a holiday!

Haha, no! Funnily enough they haven’t, but there’s still time!!! 🤣

  3. HAPPY belated birthday, Becky! It seems like March has been pretty busy for you overall, I hope that April will be somehow a little calmer for you! ❤ CONGRATULATIONS on the followers and on the promotion, this is so exciting, I'm so happy for you! 🙂 And the harry potter escape room and cocktails, I am loving the theme SO much ahh this sounds like so much fun 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing my post! I hope you'll have a wonderful April! 🙂

    • Thank you, Marie! It has been very hectic (in both good and bad ways) so thank you for sending calm vibes my way for April, desperately needed!
Thank you so much, I feel like I’m in a dream. I DON’T KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED.
It was so nice to have an HP birthday theme, especially as all our friends who went were super into it as well. 😁
No problem! I hope you have a wonderful April also!

  4. Happy belated birthday Becky!! The HP escape room sounds like SO much fun. I had no idea something like that existed but it sounds awesome! And a huge congratulations on reaching 1000 followers🎉 You definitely deserve them!!

Ah I’m really sorry to hear you didn’t end up liking Priory as much you expected to! I’ve been wanting to read it but I’m just waiting for the hype to go down a bit😅

And thank you so, so much for sharing my post in here! That is so kind of you and it means a lot to me💞 Great wrap up, and I hope you have an amazing April!

    • Thank you so much, Brianna! The escape room was amazing. 😀 There are lots of different companies that do them all over the world, but this is the first Harry Potter themed one I’ve come across (although they were very careful not to have anything specifically HP, because I imagine they’d then have to pay for extra rights. 😉 )

Thank you, I’m kind of sad about it too. Everyone else seems to have loved it so far so I’m the odd one out. It wasn’t in any way a bad book, I just felt kinda meh about it. :/

No problem at all. 🙂 Wishing you lots of good books for April! ❤

  5. Happy birthday!!!! Sounds like it was a great one :). I’m so sorry though that you didn’t like Priory as much as you had hoped. I absolutely loved it, but we can’t love them all can we? There are lots of other books out there that can become your favourites for this year :).

    • Thanks, Cindy! 😀 ❤
I'm really sad I didn't love Priory as much as I hoped, especially as on paper it was everything I LOVE, but it was still a really interesting book, even if not a great one for me! I'm really glad that you loved it, though!
Thank you! I've yet to get a 5 start read this year so I think I'm due one! 😀

  6. Well done on 1K that’s amazing!!! And very well-deserved!!! 🎉😊
And a late Happy Birthday– it sounds like you had a glorious time!! And I love that is was Harry Potter themed– sounds very magical 😉!!
And congrats on the promotion– sounds like a hectic time a work, I hope it is less stressful in April!! 😊
It’s a shame priory of the orange tree didn’t live up to your expectation!!
Oceans 8 is the only one of the oceans I have watched but I did enjoy it. After hearing that you enjoyed the others, I might check them out!! 😊
The candle looks amazing and I love coffee scents– so cool!!!
Thank you so much for sharing my post!! 💕💕 That’s really kind!!!
I hope you have a wonderful April!! 😊

    • Thank you so much! It feels so surreal that this many people have liked my words enough to follow, I can’t believe it!
I have to say it’s the best birthday I’ve had in a long time. 😀 I couldn’t recommend it enough!
I would also highly recommend checking out Elven Wick candles if you get the chance because they are really brilliant!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who watched Oceans 8 without seeing the originals, that makes me feel better. 😀 I think it’s definitely worth checking out the other movies if you liked that one because they’re done in a very similar way. There’s also a lot of direct comparison with Oceans 8 and Oceans 11 which is cool.
No problem at all, I hope you read some amazing books in April!

      • You’re welcome!!! Aww… you have a wonderful blog. I can see why so many people have followed!! ❤
Aww… I am glad you have a nice birthday!! Yes I think I will check out Elven Wick candles when I am next looking for a candle— they sound amazing!! 🙂
Yes you are not alone haha— that's cool that there is some comparisons between the movies! I will have to check them out!!
Thank you— I hope you have some great books too!! ❤

      • Thank you so much, you are too kind! ❤
It makes me so happy that you're going to look them up. If you give them a go, I hope you enjoy. 🙂
you'll have to let me know how you get on with the other Oceans films if you watch them!
Hope you have a wonderful April!

  7. CONGRATS ON YOUR PROMOTION AND HITTING 1000 FOLLOWERS!!! you deserve it all ❤ ❤ i'm sorry priory was kind of a disappointment for you. it's SO big that it's scaring me but i really want to get to it soon. i'm glad your extremely hectic month is over and i hope april is amazing and calm and relaxing for you!

    • THANK YOU SO MUCH MAY! 💕 You are way too kind *blushes*. It’s still bizarre to me that so many people are interested in reading my words!
Me too! I had such high hopes, and because it was a big book I kept waiting for it to kick off, and it never really did for me! :/
I hope you have a fabulous April too, and that you read some amazing books!

  8. Congrats on 1000 followers!! ❤ March felt super long for me too, but I’m finally making my way out of a huge reading slump – I’ve neaaaaarly finished a book this month. I’ve seen all the original Oceans films but haven’t got round to watching 8 yet – I really need to!

  9. Happy belated birthday, Becky 🙂 My friend’s husband took her to The Cauldron Harry Potter cocktail experience and I would really like to go too! In March, I managed to finish four books, which is a big improvement on the previous months. I also did a lot of crime drama watching, including two of my absolute favourites: Endeavour (Series 6) and Shetland (Series 5). I have to agree I found Avengers: Infinity War too long too, even though I enjoyed it, I just think there was a little too much going on.

    • Thank you, Jessica. 🙂 I would highly recommend it for either a special occasion or just to treat yourself. I haven’t laughed that much in a long time!
Well done on reading 4 books and beating your totals so far this year!
I like the occasional crime drama but I haven’t heard of either of those, I’ll have to look them up! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who lost steam with Infinity War. 🙂
I hope you have an amazing April! ❤

  10. Happy belated birthday, Becky! It seems like you had an amazing time with all the Harry Potter themed festivities. I’m currently planning a birthday party for one of my best friends and we’re planning a Harry Potter theme as well. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to pull off something as amazing as you had, but I’ll definitely search for different activities like the ones you mentioned.
1000 followers is also an amazing milestone! Congrats!
I do agree with you that March was a pretty draining month. I’ve been sleeping around 1am and waking up at 8am, which I think it’s a regular sleeping schedule for some people, but I’m not used to it at all. I’m tired all of the time and pretty grumpy too. I feel sorry for my friends and family, because I’ve been more snarky than usual! I can’t wait to get my sleeping schedule back, truly, hahah.
I’ve watched the Oceans franchise as it is my mom’s favorite, but Ocean’s 8 is honestly my favorite. I think the glamourous setting of the MET definitely helped! I’ve been watching as celebrities and artists attend the MET Gala my whole life, so it was super interesting seeing the behind the scenes.
Hoping you have a more relaxed April at work! 💛

    • Thank you so much! I’m SO happy to hear that you’re throwing your friend a Harry Potter themed party. If she’s anything like me she will absolutely love it, and I think that’s such a kind thing to do. 🙂 I hope it goes well for you!
I’m so sorry to hear that March was a draining month for you too! Wow, that’s not a lot of sleep so I’m not surprised that you’ve been struggling! I think I would be feeling very grumpy too because lack of sleep affects everything from concentration levels to annoyance thresholds. I think that affected me a little bit in March as well, but yours seems much worse. Sounds like you definitely deserve some self-care in April. Make sure you carve out some time for yourself and put yourself first, even just for a little bit! 🙂 ❤
That's such a good point about Ocean's 8 being set at the MET Gala, I hadn't thought about that! I think that did make it much more relatable as you say, which probably made me enjoy it more. It's certainly more relatable than a Casino for me anyway, because I've never been to one. 🙂
Thank you, wishing you a relaxed April as well!
