About

Hello, my name is Becky!Welcome to my blog!

Kingdom of Ash release
I’m just a girl in my 20s, learning to adult while using more exclamation marks and Caps Lock than is socially acceptable!

I can usually be found drinking tea, riding dragons and devouring books. Oh, and possibly also quoting Tolkien.

I primarily read YA and fantasy. Reading about feminist assassins, princesses and magic wielders sets my soul on fire. I also have a soft spot for the chosen ones, and I’m incredibly passionate about books with mental health rep.

I’ve been rambling about books since 2011 when an ALevel project led to the discovery of WordPress. Through the years, this space has been many things for me depending on where I was in my life. I’ve realised this blog will continue to evolve with me – hopefully for a long time. If you’d like to stick around for the ride, you are most welcome!

On this blog, you will find book reviews, discussions, and other bookish fun. They’ll also be the occasional personal posts, especially about my traveling adventures!

The best thing about blogging by far is the people, so please do give me a wave because I’d love to discuss books with you!Becky the Bookaholic

  1. I dont have an English or creative writing degree either but thats not stopping me from pursuing a writing career. So don’t feel out of place, I think you have a great blog and I’m really digging some of your topics! Looking forward to more of your posts… 🙂

    • Aha, thank you.
Really? I’m suprized, your writing is so witty. Well maybe one day I’ll get freshly pressed like you 😉 *here’s hoping*
Thank you, and I will! 🙂

  2. Hello Becky. I am English as well but not a student. Sometimes I wonder if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Under that picture of the nice, happy blonde girl you state that most of the pictures on the blog are not yours. Are we to assume that that cheery, smiling person is not in fact you…?

I actually published a book recently myself and was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing it at some point. It is a collection of short stories called Shades of Grey and I can give you a code for a free download if like.

(You are probably getting a sense of de ja vu here…)

    • Ahaha, yes the cheery blonde girl is in fact me 🙂 Nice to meet you Michael. Well at least if your not a student you won’t be stacking up a huge pile of debt. Thats got to be a good thing right?
Aha, definitely de ja vu. I would be happy to review your book when I get the time if I am able to download it for free, although I don’t have a kindle, I don’t know if that matters….how exactly does it work?

  3. Hi Becky, just stumbled across your blog and I love it. Honesty and passion are pretty much all a blogger needs,( oh, and something good to read or look at when you find the blog) so you’re doing fine.

    • Aw thank you so much! It’s so nice to hear someone’s enjoying my blog, sometimes I worry I’m boring people! Haha. Thanks for stopping by, hopefully I’ll hear more from you in the future?
I’m going to check out your blog now as well 🙂

  5. Hi Becky! I just wanted to stop in and say hello, and wish you a lot of fun as and when you explore the classics. Cheers! 🙂

  6. Good evening,
i like your blog. Your post are very interisting.
I invite you to visit my intercultural blog: http://parolesemplici.wordpress.com/mytinbox/
I define this blog “In parole Semplici” as a “virtuacultural tin box” where they are guarded thoughts, memories, images, sounds, and simple stories.

My dream is to create a intercultural blog with authors from around the world.
Do you want to collaborate for “In parole Semplici”?
    I’ll wait your reply:
    inparolesemplici@gmail.com

    Thanks

    • Hi Josè, it’s nice to hear from you. 🙂
Thank you for the kind offer, I’m very flattered! However I’m afraid I’m going to have to decline. Your blog idea sounds great! Unfortunately at the moment, I just wouldn’t have the time to contribute, as I already help out with another blog as well as my own.
Again thank you for the offer, I wish you the best of luck with your intercultural blog! 🙂

  7. I am a student too! Sometimes I find it hard to keep posting amidst the tight schedule, I’m sure you’ve had those moments.
But you have a nice blog up here, so keep penning and shining! Many of your readers, I am sure, will find your posts inspiring! 🙂

Have a lovely day, my friend! 🙂

    Subhan Zein

    • I definitely do! It’s a constant battle, but I have to say the blogging usually wins out over the assignment/coursework 😉 I’ll be sitting doing my work, and suddenly have a great idea for a blog post, and find myself slowly inching towards the computer! Haha.
Thank you very much for the kind words, I hope to keep this blog going for a long time. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by! I will be sure to check out your blog as well.

      • Aw thanks. I’ve read a bit but I’ll check the rest out in the morning. I’ve been meaning to head down and put the kettle on for the last 40 minutes. Oh! This may intrest you. Sister decided to drop it on me today that apparently a small cup of tea has more caffine that a can of red bull. (This has done little to reduce my consumption of tea.)

      • Cool.
:O Really? That’s terrible! I can’t believe that, still, it’s worth it and tea taste much nicer than red bull!
Ahh you should definitely go make a cup, I have a half finished one in my hand as we speak, pure heaven!

  9. let me tell you something. this “not-perfect-English-with-misspelling-and-everything” makes you so much more sympathetic than any other blogger I’ve come across so far. I don’t like people, who think they’re so much better because they’re better writers. What I searched for, is someone like me, enjoying books. Looks like I’ve found one 😉

    • Really? Haha thank you, that’s good to hear!
Yeah I must admit, I hate it when people make you feel inferior on spelling, that’s something I have come across a lot in my life, sure my spelling is not perfect, but it’s not going to make the world stop turning. 😛
Me too, looking forward to chatting with you in the future! 🙂

    • No problem, any friend of Nisha’s is a friend of mine as it were 😉
Thank you so much! 🙂 I’m finally starting to feel like it’s ok that my grammar and spelling isn’t perfect, the people on wordpress seem to like me even with the grammar flaws, which is so great! 🙂

  10. Thanks i feel so welcome lol in a blogging sense! haha No ones grammar and spelling is ever perfect until they use spell check 😉 Thats the great thing people should love your work, personal or work related posts no matter the mistakes!! but that is just my opinion! 🙂

  11. I’m studying a physical science-type degree, so my vocabulary shrunk dramatically after high school. Heck, the only multisyllabic word I commonly use is “expansion” due to heat :\ Don’t worry too much about grammar or spelling mistakes, I often leave out entire words from a sentence and only realise it (if I ever actually do) once it’s too late) 🙂

    • Physics science eh? That sounds difficult! Well don’t be too discouranged, I actually had to look up the word multisyllabic just to work out what you were talking about! Teehee.
Thanks for the advice, it’s nice to know that other people in the blogosphere aren’t perfect either!
      Thanks for commenting. 🙂

  12. I feel stupid for not noticing this before, if it’s not something new, but how did you customize your theme? I mean, more than one Menus, writing etc. I was under the impression that you either had to have a wordpress.org blog or pay for it?

    • Hey, I would be glad to help, wordpress can be difficult to navigate sometimes! 🙂 I’m a little confused as to what you want to know though. My writing is the writing that comes with this theme the majority of the time, however I use windows live writer to write up my posts (which came with my computer) and on there you can change the font, but I don’t think you can do it using just the normal post box you use on wordpress. You could go on start on your computer and search ‘Windows Live Writer’ or ‘Blog’ and see if you have it. 🙂
For the menus, do you mean how I have the drop down, like on my 2012 reading challenge? Or do you mean how to get more than just Home and About?
Also do you want to know how to change the background like I have as well…?

      • I dunno why it seemed why the writing is a different font than the default one. Anyhoo. I know how to make a drop down menu ( different pages etc) but most themes, the free ones, say you can only how one Menu. The About one I assume. So I figured having more than Home and About meant you either bought a theme or use wordpress.org instead of .com.
And yeah, I know you can change the background color, like background around the theme. But I didn’t know you could change the theme’s color. That make any sense? 🙂

      • Nope, you can have lots like I do, and you don’t have to pay for them 🙂
Yepp you can change the theme’s colour to a certain extent, if you go on appearance – themes then at the top it has manage themes – then go on theme options – and there you can change the colours to white like your one currently,or black like my one, and there it will also let you play around with the layout and background colour. But it doesn’t let you change it that much, if you want any of the fancy stuff them you do have to pay. :L

  13. You’re very conversational with your writing which is an excellent skill! I have enjoyed reading your blogs thus far and am glad to have found someone who doesn’t know exactly what they are doing but is doing it effortlessly! Give me hope 🙂 Happy writing, cheers!

  14. hi becky, im a student too 😉 but only of that challenging subject life 😉 I live in south westland NZ, and love books , but beauty also of other arts 😉 I enjoy your style immensely and would nominate you for the “three cheers award” ( but im not sure how ) AND your’ve noticed somethings up with three !!! , ALL the best 4 UNI 😉 😉 😉

  15. Hey Becky, I really like your blog and the way you have talked about yourself in here. Like you I am not a Creative Writing student (but a student none the less) who simply loves reading and writing and cherishes a hope to have something published (paperback or hardback) someday.

As you said that you may not get in to the depths of whatever the books may have to offer but then again understanding the essence of what the books offer is the thing many read for. Don’t you agree?

    • Hiya. 🙂 Thank you, that’s so nice of you to say! I guess I was just trying to be honest, but also write a sort of disclaimer in case anyone picked at my grammar and spelling. It’s something I’m very conscious of, but that I’m trying to improve.

Ohh, well I’m always glad to find another person who loves reading and writing! I hope you have the opportunity to live the dream and get published one day. 🙂

That is very true. Thanks for subscribing! I hope we can chat more in the future. 🙂 I’m off to go and check out your blog now.

    • Thank you! Awwh don’t worry, I’ve already been nominated for it about five times but it still means a lot to me every time! It’s great to know that people are reading and enjoying. 😀 It’s such a great feeling!

  16. Hey Becky, my Beautiful Creatures boxed set arrived today, and I am dying to show it to you! I wasn’t planning on doing a blog about it, but I was wondering if you would be willing to give me your email address so I can send you photos :). You can send it to me at loonybin@sympatico.ca if you don’t want to post it here, and if you would rather not exchange email addresses that is fine too :). I know some people like to keep their email addresses private, and I’m totally ok with that. Just let me know ok?

    • Ooooh goodie, and I can’t wait to see it! 😀
I’ve just sent you an email so hopefully it should all go through okay. I can just picture you staring and stroking them all night. 😛

      • Hi again :). I haven’t received your email yet, so I thought I would make sure that you didn’t put an “e” in loonybin. Lots of people do that and then I don’t get the email. Either that or it is just slow in arriving. It’s funny you should say about me stroking them all night because I told the girls at work today that I was going to sleep with my “quadruplets” tonight LOL!! They all thought I was crazy, but they smiled indulgently at me :).

      • Hmm, that is strange indeed! I haven’t added the ‘e’ because I copied and pasted it from here and it’s definitely right. Maybe it’s gone into spam or something?

I’ll send you a message on goodreads anyway just in case, that way not everyone can see it. 🙂

        HAHA quadruplets! That’s hilarious. 😀

  17. Hi Becky, you’ve got such a great ‘about’ section and a brilliant blog! Your sense of humour really comes through in your writing style and I’m thoroughly enjoying rifling through all your posts. (That makes me sound like a stalker. I’m not I promise…) Looking forward to reading more of your book reviews! 🙂

    • Hey Lottie, 🙂 awhh thank you very much! 😀 That’s so kind of you to say, and I’m glad to hear you’ve liked my post enough to keep on looking through them (and it’s not stalkerish at all. :P).

It’s nice to meet you, and thanks for following!

  18. The great thing about reading and writing is that we’re the more we do, the better our writing becomes. So don’t write yourself off (no pun intended)– being an avid reader you are already a strong writer and will only continue to improve! 🙂

Glad to have found your blog, Becky. I love the word ‘bookaholic’!

    • That is very true, I think I have gotten a lot better at reviewing since I started this blog and my overall writing has probably improved as well! Ha ha, it was a good pun though. :L
Thank you for the encouragement and I’m glad you like the blog. 😀

  22. Hey Becky,

I have been enjoying your posts. Had a quick question for you… Would you be interested in participating in any blog tours? Let me know if you are and I can send you some information.

Again, you have an awesome blog. Hope you fix your commenting technical difficulties soon.

    Have a wonderful day!
    ~Ariesgrl

    • Hello Ariesgrl,

Thank you. 🙂 I’m glad you’ve been reading and enjoying, it means the world to a blogger, as I’m sure you know!

Unfortunately blog tours are the one thing I don’t do on this blog at the moment, not really for any specific reason other than that I am just not interested in pursuing that side of blogging for the moment, but thank you for the kind offer!

Wishing you luck on your search. 🙂

  23. Oh my gosh, this is too big of a coincidence not to share! I was poking around another blog (The story reading ape) and I clicked on a random link on his list of book blogs. I liked it so much that I decided to follow. Anyway, a couple of minutes later I got your reply from my Toothless post and clicked on the link to your webpage in the comment area and it took me to the same spot! I guess it was meant to be, LOL. I love your taste in books, and look forward to reading more from you in the future!
    Niki Hawkes

    • No wayyy! That’s so crazy when things happen like that, thanks for sharing. 😀 Funnily enough I also found you through The Story Reading Ape, this is why I love blogrolls so much! (Although I couldn’t make my own because I just love too many and I’d feel like I was showing favouritism.)

Hehee, lets hope so. I still can’t believe that, so funny. Anyway, I’m glad you liked the blog and thanks so much for following! If you love my taste in books I’m sure that I will love your taste in books as well. 😉

      Thanks, Niki!

  24. Well, I just now realized you’ve been a previous recipient of the Liebster Award… but here’s another! Yeah, I nominated you, but since you’ve already done the whole shebang before, I’d understand if you didn’t feel like doing it again, no worries:) Oh, the link is here:

    The Liebster Award

    Keep being awesome!

    • Hahaa thank you very much, I’m always happy to receive one! I will pop right on over to your blog and check it out. 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to nominate me! It always means a lot.

  26. I hear ya! I feel so lost and confused with blogging… and most of the time I fear I’m boring people to tears. But I think you’re doing a great job! I love your wit and spirit; makes for fun reading 🙂 Keep up the awesome work!

    • It’s such a mind field at first, but even now after being on WordPress for two years I am still discovering new things I can do and picking up little tips here and there and I love that. It feels great to learn something new!

Thank you so much, no one has ever told me I have wit or spirit before, awesome. 😀 Thanks for taking the time to read!

    • Hi Rebecca! Awwh thank you so much I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Ohh for sure, no bookworms reading session is complete without them, or so says my list. 😉 That’s awesome thanks, welcome aboard. I look forward to chatting books with you. 😀

  27. As a longtime blog and Pinterest fan (seriously, how can one girl be so ravishingly stylish and devastatingly book-savvy?), I just finished a title think you’d enjoy: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Think of it as Ocean’s Eleven-meets-Game of Thrones. It’s witty, well-crafted, and perfectly plotted. Enjoy!

    • Hello! Thank you for stopping by my blog. Hahaa, who said book love and fashion couldn’t go together? Oooh that you for the tip, I always love getting recommendations. I’m reading Game of Thrones at the moment and loving it, so to discover any other books remotely similar would be great. I will be sure to look it up. 🙂

      Thanks for commenting!

    • Awwh thank you. 🙂 I’m glad you think I seem down to earth an honest, those two terms probably describe me quite well actually.

I look forward to chatting books with you!

    • Yikes, that’s embarrassing! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂 I wrote this about page when I first started blogging, I like to think my writing has come a long way since then (or at least improved a little bit), but this totally escaped my notice.

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  28. Hi there! I just thought I’d drop by to let you know that I just nominated you for the “One Lovely Blog Award” over on my blog. It’s about time that I could nominate you for something!

  29. Hi!! I have found you through the versatile blogger award and so happy that I did!! I too love reading and am working on a book of my own! I am reading Big Little Lies right now!! So happy to have found you! Happy Reading! 🙂

  32. Hi Becky, you know what’s just convinced me to follow your blog – your picture shows you reading Trudi Canavan – love her books. Looking forward to your blogs & hopefully we will have some great chats. Just to let you know, I’m currently reading “the Elven” by Bernhard Hennen. If you like fantasy I think you will love this one. First book in ages that once I pick it up I cannot put down.

    • Hi Michelle! Thank you for following my blog and I am SO happy to come across another Trudi Canavan fan. 😀 I tell you, they are hard to find! I love her books and she is one of my all-time favourite authors. I hope we have some great chats too!

Glad to hear you’re enjoying The Elven, I love a really good fantasy book. 🙂

I can’t wait to hear from you.

    • Hi, Becca! Thank you so much for the compliment, that means a lot. 🙂
Is it okay if I decline this time? I have such a backlog of posts that I need to write at the moment that I really need to focus on those right now before I drown under my pile on non-reviewed books. xD But perhaps I can do one for you in the future? Maybe in a couple of months time?

I would still be happy to have you guest post on my blog, however, so that you can give your blog some exposure. 🙂 If you’re still interested pop me an email at blogsofabookaholic@gmail.com and we’ll sort something out! 🙂

Okay so the first thing that came to my mind was “Damn she still replies to comments” but what I really want to convey in this comment is how much your blog is inspiring and how much it motivated me to stop lurking around in the internet and get to reading. I’m a bookaholic too but once I’m on the internet I’m a lost cause. I’ve read some of your reviews and I love them, keep doing what you’re doing. 🙂 🙂

    • Haha, of course I do! I read every one and try to make sure I answer them too. It’s the best part of blogging. 🙂 Thanks you so much for stopping by and saying such kind things! It always means so much to me as a blogger to hear that I have been inspiring or motivational, it’s the best feeling and it never wears off!
Haha, the internet can be a bit of a time suck, don’t worry, I am exactly the same. Thank you so much, I look forward to chatting books with you in the future. 🙂
