Quoting the Quill

Get out from your house,
From your cave, from your car
From the place you feel safe,
From the place that you are,

Get out and..
Go running
Go funning
Go wild.

Get out from your head,
And get growing,

Dear child.

“Today I’d like to sit and read,
Forget I have a job I need.
Ignore the things I have to do,
And just enjoy a book or two.”

Howdy fellow bookworms, I hope you’re well! Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been feeling zapped of blogging creativity lately, but I’m sure it will return soon, it always does. 🙂

I spotted this fun little poetry/quote ditty on Pinterest the other day and found it amusing, so I thought I would share it with you! Continue reading

“Life has many ways of testing a person’s will, either by having nothing happen at all or by having everything happen all at once.”

– Paulo Coelho

Hey everyone, sorry it’s been a little quiet around here lately! But as the above quote suggests, the universe works in strange ways. Do you ever find that things always seem to happen in one go? You can have months of downtime and suddenly BOOM, everything happens at once. It seems to be working that way for me at the moment.

At the start of April, I went on my much anticipated, lifelong dream trip to Italy to see Rome, and it was amazing!! Continue reading

“Old books exert a strange fascination for me – their smell, their feel, their history; wondering who might have owned them, how they lived, what they felt.”

– Lauren Willig

~ * ~

I like how this quote sums up so well what I love about old or second hand books. I like to romanticize the idea that books have two stories, one the words on the paper, and second the story of all the people who have picked the novel up and formed thoughts about it. Continue reading

“Here’s what I think: I think I’ve got a map in my car that wants to be used, and I think there are places we can go that need to be seen. Maybe no one else will ever visit them and appreciate them or take the time to think they’re important, but maybe even the smallest places mean something. And if not, maybe they can mean something to us.”

– All the Bright Places (Jennifer Niven)

~ * ~

This was my favourite quote from the amazing book All the Bright Places I read a couple of months ago. It’s that kind of quote that makes your breath catch because it really speaks to an in-depth desire in your heart to travel. Continue reading

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.”

– J.D. Salinger

I’m currently reading The Catcher in the Rye, and when I came across this quote it instantly struck me as true, even though it was a thought that had never occurred to me before. How awesome would it be if when you finished a truly earth-shattering book, you could phone up the author and fangirl with them over their OWN book? They could answer all your questions about character motivations, possible sequels and their world building process. I get all giddy just thinking about it. 😀 Continue reading

Quoting the Quill

Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.

– Unknown

I came across this quote the other day and was immediately struck by it, because it wasn’t a train of thought I had ever considered before. We are so obsessed with becoming something through our experiences, but I kind of like the idea presented here of unbecoming too. Continue reading

This is a quote I discovered years ago that instantly resonated with me. Do you ever find that things seem to happen in waves? You can have nothing going on for a month and then BAM, you’ll have a week where you’re running around non-stop or have an endless to-do list. Continue reading

“Knowledge is dangerous. Once you know something, you can’t get rid of it. You have to carry it. Always.”

– Samantha Shannon (The Bone Season)

~ * ~

This was one of my favourite quotes from my most recent 5 star read, The Bone Season. It’s a little ominous, and not as uplifting as the quotes I usually post, but I really love it. I think one of the reasons for this is because so often people don’t understand why I love reading books and I think this sums it up quite well. Books give us knowledge, therefore books are powerful.
But with great power comes great responsibility as they say! 😉 Continue reading

“I’m terrified that my journey won’t tie up all the loose ends nicely. Because this is a life, not just a story, and life doesn’t always go the way stories tell you.”

– Holly Bourne (The Manifesto on How to be Interesting)

~ * ~

This quote was one that particularly stuck out to me while reading The Manifesto on How to be Interesting recently (you can read my review here)! The character is a teen writer who is obviously, interested in stories – what makes a good one, how best to write one, and why we as readers are so fascinated by them.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

– Dr. Seuss

Well this week I packed up all of my stuff and moved out of my university accommodation, having to leave the great people I had been living with and had become great friends with behind. I’m not going to lie, it was sad, especially as these people will be living such a big distance away from me that it will be quite hard to keep in touch, but we’re going to try.

“Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.”

I think this quote is one of the most important life lessons anyone can give you! It can be so easy to focus on following the crowd and copying what other people are doing, or to emulate someone you admire in the hopes of becoming more like them. Continue reading

I love the idea of this – that somehow, somewhere fate looks down on you and thinks hey, I know exactly what that girl/guy needs, they need this book right here! That will cheer them up/solve their problem! *Rummages through pile of books, beams to specific place on earth.* Continue reading
